Foiling Continued

My last post for the blog hop explored many foiling techniques and I mentioned there was one I needed to play with more before sharing.  Well I did and I would like to share those final techniques in this post.  There are many more things that can be done with foiling, but I am focusing on general techniques and then we can explore in future post how to incorporate these into your projects.  Lets start with a photo or two.

This technique combines foil, glitter and die cuts.  Are you ready.

Lets us look at what we need first:
A die of some type.  In the examples I used a die from Hero Arts, .butterfly-confetti, Tim Holtz, paper-cut-bird- but any die will work with the technique, even single dies as we will see later.

Need a sheet of 2 sided adhesive;  Here is what I learned about this.  The first time I tried this, I did not have any sheets, just tape.  So I covered my paper with the wide taper.  But the line show.  I left it on my desk and worked around it, and the longer it sat and was moved or covered by "things" the more obvious the line became.  So I bought the sheets and repeated with stellar success.

The third and most important part is the backing sheet from "something".  I used the backing from a magnet sheet for my first try, then I moved to just using the backing from the sheet of double sided tape.  All that is left is glitter, foil and imagination.

READY.

I started out by die cutting the backing sheet.
applied the 2 sided tape to my card stock, removed the backing sheet and laid this over the sticky surface.  Burnished down with another piece of the backing sheet.. DONT TOUCH the sticky.

added white glitter or glitter of your choice, I used Elizabeth Craft, Warm Diamond Microfine.  and burnish in.

Carefully remove the mask.  This is the hardest part, just be patient and if you don't rip it, you can reuse.

OK, for the first example I started with the bird.

Be stingy with laying down the glitter and burnish it in as you go, don't remove the excess yet.

All that is left is to lay down foil, rub in hard and remove the sheet, repeat with different colors until all finished.  Then brush away the rest of the bird glitter, and add more white glitter the the whole card, burnish in, and finish your card.  Easy!!!

Lets look at the rest:
With this card no Foil.  I just used different colors of glitter and filled in the die cuts.  If you double click you can get a picketer and see how the mask is with the glitter. In this example.  I did not remove the mask first, just filled in the holes, burnished down, then removed mask and added white glitter.   I thought this was just too busy so. . . . . . . .

after removing the backing paper, I placed individual die cuts onto the sticky surface.  Added white glitter to the background and then removed the mask.

Then I applied foil to the butterflies.  See those "smudge dots" they were an accident.  Where I put my finger to hold down the foil while I burnished, left these dots.  I liked them so when I was done went back and added more.  This is why you have to use glitter after finishing.  The sticky surface is still slightly tacky when done.  That final glitter fixes that.  Also after cutting this down to size, the sides will be tacky.  I just dipped them in glitter and burnished but baby powder would work too.

All that was left was to make the cards.

All were matted with a gold paper that matched the butterfly tags in this month's Club Scrap Kit, Vintage Botany.  The butterfly cards were placed on A2 card bases.  The bird was matted in addition to the gold with the purple paper from this months kits and then onto a white card base.  Ribbon also came from Vintage Botany.

Club Scrap Blog Hop: Pattern Play

Time for another blog hop!! Are you excited.  You should have arrived here from: Jennifer or if you want to go to the beginning, Click Here.

OK the kit for the month is Pattern Play.  To be honest I never got beyond the stamps.  They are fabulous and for the techniques I am going to share, they can't be beat!!

To continue our exploration of foiling, I tried several different methods and would like to share them with you.  This is where we move foiling away from the laminator onto the stamp table.  Are you ready.  Well here is just a glimpse of what is to come!!!

I tried 3 different glues and am going to share some surprising results.

Process:
Take glue and apply to stamp.  I used 3 different glues.  The first I tried was this one:

The second was Indie Glue: this one came with a gilding flake kit I bought years ago and

Mount It by Club Scrap.  Surprise!!  The same glue we use for our unmounted stamp is an amazing technique products.

For the Indie Glue and Mount it, I squeezed it onto a acrylic block and used a sponge applicator to apply to the stamp.  You have to work fast with all of them or you will glue your stamp to the paper.

Stamped it onto the paper.  I did this with several stamps and the 3 glues.  Let them dry and took care to clean my stamps well when finished.

For the foiled cards, I just placed the foil, shiny or colored side up and burnished with a bone folder.

I decided to play with my gilding flakes while I was at it and for several of the cards gilded them.  Did not photo this part as I was covered in flakes and glue and did not want to decorate my camera!!

That is all there is to it!!  Now lets look at the results.

These were the Nuvo Glue.  Very sketchy but nice.

This is the only Indie the worked out.  After several failures, I threw the bottle of glue out too!!

The biggest surprise was how well the Mount IT worked.

While still a bit sketchy, they are more solid, and the shine is marvelous!!  This worked so well, I inked up the stamps again with Mount It and using Gilding flakes, created this assortment.

Gorgeous !!! In person they are rich and with texture and interest.

So I needed to make these into cards:  I have a total of 12 fronts and chose only a few to finish.

For the mats: I tried several options.

Put down score tape around edges and placed the foil down and burnished.
Not my favorite technique as you can see the edges of the tape.

but
with card placed on top, not so noticeable.

Then, I repeated the same with wider taper and
Added gilding flakes.  The rest of the cards I just cut gold mats:

Loverly!!!!!!!

More pics:

No sentiments.  These will be collected into a set and will be given as a notecard set.  Letting the owner write and use them for whatever need they may have, thank you, get well, etc.

That is all there is to foiling folks.  There is one more technique I tried for this post, but it failed.  I need to work on it and will share in a future blog post.  After this we should be foiling masters!!

June Team Challenge at Club Scrap: Foiling Revisited.

Hello!!
Well this months challenge was to created a single layer card, plus photo from any kit.  OH MY!! One layer, get out your thinking cap, I sure had to.  After much thought I decided to focus on a technique that I love.  I did this as my first post with Club Scrap, never since, so with all the renewed interest in foiling of late, seemed a good opportunity to visit this again.  So for this challenge, I stuck with the basics.  For the blog hop I am going to explore other more interesting techniques for foiling, so stay tuned.  But before we dive in, lets make sure we know how we got here and how to start over. So, you should have arrived from:  Cheryl, or start over Click Here.

These cards are hard to photograph.  So, I took several pics of each one so you can get a better idea.  All were made with the same technique and from start to finish, had 12 card fronts in less than one hour.  All that was left was to attach them to card fronts.

So lets look at the technique and then the cards.

Supplies:  A laser printer, a laminator, foil and card stock.  I used digital images from Club Scrap June kit.  As far as the laminator, I used the MINC, but any laminator will work.  You need to play with the settings and might need a shim.  But the idea is the toner from the laser printer is melted to adhere the foil.  Simple, heat, pressure, voila, Magic.

Step one:   I always start by creating a toner sheet.  In my application that I used for drawing or photo editing and any word processing program, draw a rectangle the size of your paper, fill with black and print.  You now have a white sheet with a big black rectangle.  This will be used to "glue down the foil".

Step 2:  Print your images on White card stock with a laser printer.  That is all folks.

Step 3:  Run your foil and printed paper through the laminator.

I used an image, turned it into a stamp in photoshop, stamped to create a pattern and printed it.  Laminated with gold foil and got this.  In a previous post, I reviewed how to created stamps from digital images in photoshop  Digital Delight.

Step 4:

When I remove the foil from the card stock, I have this left.  I place this over that Toner sheet and now I have the reverse.

The black Toner sheet is showing through the holes that were left, and the remaining gold is covering the black toner.  Check out that shine.  You can see my reflection taking this photo!!!

That is all there is to it.  Your imagination is all that is left.  So lets look at the cards!!

Cut this down and made 2 white and 2 gold card from a single sheet of foiled cardstock.  Lovely.

Next set:  This was the printed cardstock, foiled in multiple colored foil by DecoArt.

Several pics to capture the dimension and shine.

Then I took the left over and using the toner sheet

First foiled the "left overs" then ran through with gold and created this.  This was ran through twice, once with the left over and then with gold foil.

This is my favorite.  I used scraps of foil and covered the various starburst images.  Love that shine.

Because I used scraps, I really did not have a "sheet" to place on the toner.  But was able to create this from the leftovers.

Simple and quick are these cards.  All one layer, a few with sentiments.  I made many others, but the photos just didn't work.  But you get the idea.

At the blog hop, I am going to show you how to foil stamped images, so stay tuned.
